Why?

Why is my first response to antagonism simply to return the hostility?

I must face the simple truth, I am (in the words of Dallas Willard) "prepared to do evil."

I am so prepared to do evil. My heart is so sinful!! What a relief and surprise it is to me when my first response is mercy or compassion. So much room for growth!
